Marriage after 40 is wanting each other deeply while both of you quietly calculate whether your lower backs can support the decision.

Desire didn’t disappear.

It just stopped arriving under perfect lighting with an empty calendar and absolutely no digestive consequences.

Now it has to work around:

A questionable knee.

Three unfinished conversations.

The dog staring like an unpaid therapist.

Somebody asking, “Did you lock the door?”

And the undeniable possibility that removing one sock could somehow cause a hamstring injury.

Sexy.

But here’s what nobody tells you:

Desire can actually get better when it stops trying to look impressive.

When you’re young, attraction is often about mystery.

After enough years together, there is no mystery.

This person has seen you sick.

Angry.

Scared.

Half-dressed and searching the bedroom for glasses already sitting on your face.

They know your stories, your scars, your bullshit, and exactly which noise means your back has gone rogue again.

And they still reach for you.

That’s not settling.

That’s intimacy with its work boots on.

It’s flirting across the kitchen while life is being a pain in the ass.

It’s touching each other without every touch becoming a demand.

It’s being able to say not tonight without punishment—and come here without embarrassment.

It’s knowing that sometimes passion needs candles…

and sometimes it needs somebody to finish the damn dishes so the other person’s brain can rejoin the marriage.

Real intimacy isn’t constant fireworks.

Fireworks are loud, expensive, and occasionally set the neighbor’s yard on fire.

Real intimacy is attention.

It’s curiosity after familiarity.

It’s making room for desire instead of assuming it should perform on command.

It’s laughing when the moment goes sideways.

It’s remembering that your partner is still a whole human being—not furniture that has been in the house since 2008.

And sometimes it’s looking at the person beside you and realizing:

We have survived bills, funerals, hormones, children, disappointments, stupid arguments, and whatever the hell happened to our metabolism…

and I still want you.

Maybe differently.

Definitely more carefully.

But without illusion.

Without performance.

Without pretending either of us is twenty-five.

Desire didn’t die.

It got honest.
